This is a clear liquid that turns wood grey immediately upon application. The amount of grey will depend on how much tannin your wood has. The greater the tannin, the greater the grey. So, this is particularly effective on very tannic woods like white oak, red oak, and many pines. You will have a much more muted reaction on maple, beech, or birch. The effect on Hickory is stunning. But here is the caveat: fumed will look slightly different, even on wood of the same species, depending on the unique tannin profile of the tree that grew it. So, if you need exact and predictable color, this is not the product for you. If you have the fortitude to experiment on a sample of your actual lumber and value the unique and custom color that results, this is a game changer.
This product is for cosmetic purposes only – it has not protective value. It must be top-coated with a product designed to resist solvents and abrasion. It was designed to be top-coated with Rubio Monocoat Oil Plus 2C, but it works beautifully under Pallmann Magic Oil and under both waterborne and oil-based polyurethane. Be aware that most topcoats will significantly change the appearance of the initial Fumed grey color. Waterborne finishes will change the appearance of fumed woods the least.
Allow extra time to use this product. It must be applied and then allowed to dry for 36 hours, then be rinsed off with water, and allowed to dry again. Skipping this step will always cause bond and performance failure of the top coat. Always.
