This is designed as base or primer coat only!
Just because Bona DriFast Sealer says “sealer” in its name doesn’t mean you should use it for all your coats. In the wood floor world, “sealer” refers to the first coat that goes onto the bare wood. These are formulated to be runnier and they bond into wood better than the higher-solid topcoats. Topcoats also bond better to a sealer than they do to the wood itself.
The value of this particular sealer is that, even though it is an oil-based (aka solvent-based) finish, we can use it with either oil-based or waterborne topcoats. Yes, really. We use it as a way to get that beautiful, warm amber color that oil-based finishes give to wood, while allowing us to use better, stronger, and much less toxic waterborne finish coats over the top.
We aren’t using this off-label – it was designed to do this! That makes Bona DriFast our favorite “amberizer” under all the Bona topcoats that we sell (Mega and Traffic) and under all the Pallmann topcoats (Pall-X 96 Nexgen and Pall-X Power). It plays well with others.
But, you still have to be careful – jumping from one solvent base product to another still must be done thoughtfully. The label may say “DriFast”, but if you plan to use it under a waterborne topcoat, you have to wait a full 12 hours and you must lightly sand it at 180grit, and then remove all that sanding dust.
This product is sold in gallons and quarts.
Coverage rate 400-600sqft per gallon depending on wood porosity and moisture content. And floor gaps.
Bona DriFast Sealer does not come in different sheen levels because its sheen will be buried under the topcoats – you can choose your gloss level for those.
Recommended application: t-bar or 3/16″ mohair roller
Extra-insider pro-tip: We recommend using Bona DriFast even under the Pallmann topcoats. Those topcoats are all applied by roller. As long as you’ve already got your roller frame out, you should just roll on your DriFast as well. We sell the perfect little Mohair roller cover for this. You should buy one.
